Traditional Uses
Traditional Uses of the Priessnitz Wrap
Priessnitz wraps are a long-established hydrotherapy method that continues to be used today.
Choose the guide for your wrap. The application method and duration vary according to the reason for use: a traditional cold-to-warm application, a short cold application or gentle warm/dry comfort. The guidance below follows the instructions supplied for each HydroCure wrap.
Throat & neck
Sore Or Irritated Throat
Traditional cold-to-warm Priessnitz application
Moisten the cotton insert with cold or cool water, wring well and place it inside the wrap.
Apply comfortably around the throat.
Recommended duration: 30–60 minutes
The initial cool sensation should gradually change as the area naturally warms beneath the insulating layers.
Throat Discomfort With A Dry, Irritating Cough
Short cold, wet application
Moisten the insert with cold water, wring well, place inside the HydroCure wrap and apply around the throat.
Recommended duration: 5–10 minutes
Remove the wrap before it has fully warmed.
The application may be repeated later if required and comfortable.
Hoarseness & Voice Strain
When associated with an acute sore or irritated throat:
Use a short cold, wet application for 5–10 minutes.
For lingering hoarseness or voice strain once the acute irritation has settled:
Use a longer cold-to-warm application for approximately 20–30 minutes.
Voice rest and adequate hydration are also important.
Neck Tension & Stiffness
Dry warming application
Use the wrap dry to provide gentle warmth around the neck. You may use it on its own to retain body heat, or with a safely warmed insert or with warmed HydroCure cherry-stone heat pillow specially sized to fit this wrap. Sold separately.Recommended duration: approximately 15–20 minutes, or longer if comfortably warm and well tolerated.
Head & sinus
Headache & Migraine-Related Discomfort

Moisten the cotton insert with cool water, wring well and place it inside the wrap.
Recommended duration: 10–20 minutes
Apply across the forehead or around the head as most comfortable.
Forehead & Temple Pressure
Short cold, wet application
For pressure or discomfort associated with headache or tension, apply the cool, damp wrap for approximately 10–20 minutes.
If the pressure is associated with sinus congestion, use the warm/dry method below instead.
Tooth / Facial Discomfort
Short cold, wet application
Position the cool, damp wrap over the affected side of the head or face.
Recommended duration: 5–10 minutes
This is for temporary comfort only; persistent or severe dental or facial pain should be assessed.

Use the wrap dry, with a comfortably warmed insert or a HydroCure cherry-stone heat pillow.
Duration: according to comfort.

Warm, dry application
Position the wrap across the base of the skull and upper neck.
Use dry on its own or with a comfortably warmed HydroCure cherry-stone heat pillow sized to fit this wrap. Sold separately.

Moisten the cotton insert with cool water, wring it out thoroughly and place it inside the wrap. Apply directly over the affected area.
Recommended duration: approximately 30–60 minutes.
The wrap should feel cool at first, then gradually become neutral and comfortably warm as the natural warming and local blood circulatory response develops.
A longer application may be used if it remains comfortable and well tolerated.
Rheumatic Aches & Stiffness
Traditional cold-to-warm Priessnitz application
Apply the cool, damp wrap around the affected joint or muscular area.
Recommended duration: approximately 30–60 minutes, according to individual response.
Allow sufficient time for the initial cooling sensation to progress into natural warming.
Muscle Aches After Physical Activity Or Overuse
Traditional cold-to-warm Priessnitz application
For aching or tired muscles without significant acute swelling or heat, apply for approximately 30–60 minutes.
If the area is newly injured, hot or swollen, use a short cold application instead.
Tendon & Soft-Tissue Discomfort

Traditional cold-to-warm Priessnitz application — approximately 30–60 minutes.

Short cold application — approximately 5–10 minutes.
Bruising & Mild Swelling After A Minor Injury
During the early, acute stage:
Use a short cold application for approximately 5–10 minutes.
Once the initial heat and swelling have settled, a traditional cold-to-warm Priessnitz application may be used for approximately 30–60 minutes.
Do not apply over broken skin.
Children’S “Growing Pains”
Traditional cold-to-warm Priessnitz application
For familiar, occasional aching in the legs, apply the cool, damp wrap comfortably around the affected area.
Recommended duration: approximately 20–30 minutes.
If needed and well tolerated, re-moisten the insert with cool water and repeat the application.
Children should always be supervised during use.

Recent Irritation, Minor Injury Or Swelling
Short cold application
If the wrist is newly irritated, warm or mildly swollen, use the cool, damp wrap for approximately 5–10 minutes rather than allowing it to progress into prolonged warming.
Repeat later if comfortable and appropriate.
Dry Application
The wrap may also be worn dry for gentle warmth, comfort and support, including during periods of rest.
PLEASE NOTE: Tingling or numbness can accompany carpal tunnel syndrome, but the wrap is intended to provide comfort rather than correct nerve compression. Persistent or worsening numbness, loss of sensation or reduced hand strength should be medically assessed.
Individual response varies. During a traditional Priessnitz application, the initial cool sensation should gradually change into comfortable warmth.
Remove the wrap if the area remains unpleasantly cold, causes shivering, increased pain or discomfort.
